Down to Earth Rocket Science
Energy / Environmental Note:
The potential power available on Earth from space based solar energy and Earth based nuclear fusion is infinite for all practical purposes. Compared to these latent technologies, fossil fuel reserves on Earth have been a stopgap after wood. Some good will have come from it.
The good duly noted, the fossil fuel 300 year stopgap - from say the year 1860 to 2160 when coal reserves run out - is nevertheless tiny, albeit not tiny in duration of mismanaged negative consequences. So divide 300 by however many years that you believe humans will have inhabited the Earth upon extinction. Be that one million years, one billion, or just another 100,000 years, 300 years isn't very long in comparison. Fossil fuels truly are just a petty and dirty band aid used while we get our act together industrially and technologically. That they are part and parcel to industry during a brief period is only a footnote in the grand scheme of energy potential.
The fossil fuel industry and politicians seem to have had a bobble head relationship as have some alternative energy pundits. Both industries point to the other as being alarmists in some way. As diversionary profits flow - the real driver behind what is used - the unlimited profits available from space based solar and nuclear fusion energy remain untapped. Given their potential gain, the race is on of course. Earth and Space favors space based solar now but nuclear fusion may ultimately be the cleanest. Both, along with fuel cell and other sensible technologies will, of course, power our posterities worlds - and our own.
